Currently, I'm running off of a 5 year old AMD box with way outdated hardware.

To rectify this issue, I've decided to purchase a new computer, with a student loan I'm taking out this summer.

Here's the specs:

CPU

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz 6MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor

I went with this Intel model because it overclocks like a dream, it runs smooth, and I don't need quad core functions to play games or do most of what I do on a computer, these days.

Video Card

EVGA 01G-P3-1282-TR GeForce GTX 280 Superclocked 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

I wanted to go for a fairly powerful video card, this time, and it comprises the most expensive single component of my computer. This one has good ratings, good stats, and is much better than anything I've everowned. the only down side is that it's huge, requiring me to buy a new case for it.

Motherboard

ASUS P5Q-E LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard

I've been casting about for a while for a good, solid board that may not be a RAMPAGE or RoG rated monster, but is nice, stable, and has decent technology. I settled on this one, but I'm still a bit iffy on my choice.

RAM

2X - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK

I know, it's not triple channel DDR3, but then again, I'm not running an i7, either. From my research, it appears to be good and solid, with excellent timings and good for a upper-middle range gaming machine. I felt 8gb of slower memory may do me more good than 6gbs of faster stuff. Anc cheaper, too.

HDD

Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

650 GB is more storage than all the computers I've ever owned up to this point combined. I'm sure I can make due without a TB storage device, for at least a few more years.

Optical Drive

I'll just port over my good ol', solid optical drive from my old machine. It runs well and should be compatible with the system. I'll worry about a BLu-Ray when there's more quality, cheaper drives available for purchase.

OS

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders w/ Tech Guarantee - OEM

I don't need the retail version's support. I'm savvy enough to work through or research any problems I may have. Ultimate is too expensive for only a handful more features.

Case

COOLER MASTER RC-690-KKN1-GP Black SECC/ ABS ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

It's not a COOLER MASTER HAF case, but it will get the job done nicely, especially with the two additional 120mm fans I'm getting to install in it.

Monitor

ASUS VH242H Black 23.6" 5ms HDMI Full 1080P Widescreen LCD Monitor

I was due for a nicer monitor. This seems nice and well rounded.

Power Supply

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC

I couldn't pass up a powersupply this nice, that I can use in the machine if I upgrade to an i7 mobo and cpu.

Periphials and extras

I'm getting an OCZ Alchemy II Keyboard, because I can't justify the price of a Logitech G11 as much as I like the look and sound of its features.

A logtitech G5 wired laser mouse will replace a 5$ P.o.S. that I've been using for 5 years.

I'll be replacing the stock fan of my new chip with a COOLER MASTER GeminII S RR-CCH-PBU1-GP 120mm Sleeve CPU Cooler. For the price and performance, I can't do much better in upgrading the chipset heatsink and fan I think.

Thoughts? Note that I already ordered the Video Card, CPU, Power Supply, and Monitor.

Very good computer if the objective is to run SL flawlessly. If the objective is to have the worlds largest e-peen like mine then these are the speccs you want.

(my speccs)

Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 X2 Video Card - 2GB GDDR5, PCI Express 2.0, CrossFire, (2) Dual Link DVI, HDTV

(personally overclocked and watercooled, if not, get the hydrocopper)

~~~~~~~~~
Seagate ST31000528AS Barracuda 7200.12 Hard Drive - 1TB, 7200 rpm, 32MB, SATA-3G
(slave)
WD VelociRaptor 300GB Hard Drive WD3000HLFS - 10K RPM, 16MB Cache, SATA 300MB/s
(master)
~~~~~~~~~

XION Power Real 1000W ATX Power Supply - Short Circuit output protection Up to 85% efficiency

~~~~~~~~~
MSI X58 Platinum SLI Motherboard - LGA1366, Intel X58, SLI Ready, CrossFireX Ready, Triple Channel DDR3 support, Hyperthreading support
~~~~~~~~~

Intel Core i7 975 Extreme Processor BX80601975 - 3.33GHz, LGA 1366, 6.4GT/s QPI, 8MB L3 Cache, Quad-Core, HyperThreading, Bloomfield, Retail

~~~~~~~~~
Patriot Viper 12GB PC16000 Triple Channel DDR3 Memory - 2000MHz, 12288MB (6 x 2048MB), CL8 (cl7 is faster but if you're oc'ing cpu past 3.5 ghz 10666 ram at cl7 isnt maxed, 16000 is)
~~~~~~~~~

Oc the cpu to 4.0 ghz, water cool, 22 fans, full tower case custom modded.

probly gonna replace the mobo with this

ASUS Rampage II GENE Motherboard - Intel X58, LGA 1366, µATX, Audio, PCI Express 2.0, CrossFire Ready, SLI Ready, Gbit LAN, RAID, S/PDIF

also for monitors find something with a high refresh rate, mine are 1 ms 1:2000 contrast. Personally I enjoy windows 7 even if its buggy sometimes.

There is some room for upgrade, and i plan to. Another video card in crossfire, pointless, but e-peen points. 1.5 tb slave, ill never use it, but e-peen points. Upgrade the watercooling and OC my cpu/ram/vid cards even higher. 2x I-Inc iF-281DPB 28" Widescreen LCD Monitor - 1920x1200 WUXGA, 800:1 Contrast, 3ms, HDMI, VGA, Energy Star, Tilt & Swivel Stand, w/Speakers Probably wont fit in my room, but e-peen. maby toss in a solid state drive for no apparent reason. Also need a blu ray drive that you'll never use.

ok... ill give you my thoughts on your choice of components...

Processor : immediately i can tell you that youve made a solid choice with this one... this was also my upgrade from a Pentium 4 3.40Ghz and so far it has been extremely reliable for me... goog grab...

Motherboard : the one you chose is the next one up from the one i have [mine is the P5Q Pro]... a solid reliable motherboard with plenty to dish out... again, a good choice...

Graphics Card : personally im not a fan of overclocked components as i tend to worry about them burning out at any time... but i know EVGA are a good brand of graphics cards... you also seemed to have one upped me again as i have a standard EVGA GTX 260...

Memory : you did the right thing to not go with DDR3 components, theyre way too expensive at this time and i dont think they make such a big difference with what you have at that...

Hard Drive : ... haha, i have the 500GB version of that exact same hard drive... its been pretty fast and stable for me so far, so you have a good choice there...

Optical Drive : so long as its a DVD+RW, then i say keep it... otherwise get one...

Power Supply : for what you have right now, i would recommend stepping up to a 1000W variant... this is also good for future-proofing your system...

Operating System : i dont know how much vista has changed since its early days, but the main thing is you are choosing a 64-bit, and thats what counts... i still use XP...

Case : i love your choice of case here... its a discreet design and has plenty of vents for fans, so keeping that cool will be easy... i has blue LEDs for my Antec 300... i hope youll do the same and get glowy...

thats pretty much all for my opinions... the rest are kinda outside my box to give you any opinion on... hope this helps...

I'm wondering if COOLER MASTER GeminII S RR-CCH-PBU1-GP 120mm Sleeve CPU Cooler would be enough for that CPU. I think it will be, but I can't be sure.

Agares, if you want professional help on this build with both compatibility and performance for your buck, post this on the EggXpert forums (the newegg.com community). I did, and saved like $500 with stuff I didn't need and received a compatibility check.
