testing if my avatar is showing up ;)
Once you choose your avatar to upload, you have to enter your password in to make the profile change. I had this problem the first couple tries too.

We can say he was suitably punished, Madam Curia, when I killed him ignominously with a Merf dart.

Personally I'd want to stay as far away from stealing anything from Star Wars uniforms as we could.

Why not make it a HUD thingy, so only you can hear it.
Other avatars can hear HUD sounds now.
That's...strangely meta. Sort of a weird linking between your "screen" and the world "inside" it. Like you could reach through or something. Haha. It's kind of creepy.

Kitty, actually, but, y'know...you can't tell. I has no Avatar. I should make one.
[Edit] I has one! And it looks like I have my eye-glow cranked up to like, 2000%. But that's just a doodad over my eye, really. :( [/Edit]

Yeah uh...it's just fishing the data from the stream as it comes to you, of someone's attachments. With an open-source client you can read exactly how data that's incoming is formatted, where stuff is cached, etc etc, so you can just read directly off the incoming stream to recreate.
We had programs that did similar stuff to allow third-party maps in WoW that showed stuff way out of range of your normal avatar line of sight, because it was just skimming off the incoming data stream.
