Computer Builds: Specs, Consoles & Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Year of Build: 2008, Upgraded in 2010

Name: Green Bastard *Don't ask, named after something in a TV Show, because the case lights up green, go figure*

Manufacturer: Custom built, Assembled by NCIX, Vancouver British Columbia, Canada

Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit ** Formerly Windows Vista Professional 32bit*

Power Supply Unit: Coolermaster Real Power Pro - KiloWatt 1000W

Motherboard: ASUS Commando

CPU: Intel Q6600 Quad-Core

Graphics Card: Nvidia EVGA GeForce-E GTX 285 2GB Cache ** Formerly Nvidia BFG 8800GT 512MB Cache*

Memory: 4096 MB *4GB*

Sound Card: Creative X-Fi extremegamer

HDD Space - 1000GB

** = Upgraded from original build

And I don't know what to do with my old Video Card, I'll literally have a 512mb 8800GT as a paperwieght. That's an expensive paperwieght.

Thinking of taking my two shitty computers, salvaging the best parts out of both of them, add the 88, and make the best computer possible out of all that old shit.

My inability to keep a clean work space is probably why I'm not given an office at work X.X

As for Phenom II vs. i7. Both have their right to exist. i7's might perform better, but Phenom II's are not that far behind and performs very well for its lower pricetag.

so... Im finally at a point where I can start looking into some very badly needed upgrades for my dinosaur. Right now all Im considering are a new powersupply (before this ones completely) and a new ATI Radeon GFX card. The vid card's easy.. 1 gig ATI Radeon HD 5870... the PS on the other hand.. Im not sure about. I need at LEAST 650 Watts so that I dont have to worry about upgrading again in a few months time.. Any suggestions?

Current Specs:

Processor

2.80 gigahertz Intel Pentium D

16 kilobyte primary memory cache

1024 kilobyte secondary memory cache

64-bit ready

Multi-core (2 total)

Main Circuit Board

Board: Intel Corporation D946GZIS AAD45436-402

Bus Clock: 200 megahertz

BIOS: Intel Corp. TS94610J.86A.0047.2006.0911.0110 09/11/2006

Memory Modules

3326 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory

Any suggestions for other upgrades, including the GFX (as long as its ATI and not Nvidia) are more than welcome.

Just because it's an 8-core processor doesn't mean it's good; The FX (bulldozer) chipsets were recently released and are expensive, but under-powered, 8 cores means nothing in contrast to clock speeds and a slow GHz. You could buy an i7-2700k and have way better performance.

That said, I bought this PSU about a month ago, it's fairly cheap for the output, and it's graded at 85% efficiency, which isn't too bad. It's also really quiet and runs cool, and it's modular.

Secondly, Measure the room inside your case before trying to pick out a GPU. Your motherboard is a microATX form motherboard, meaning you probably only have 1x PCIx16 port and not a whole ton of room.

To be fair, Eriksson's idea of completely updating and buying a new PC isn't a bad one considering the size and age of your motherboard (4gb RAM, dual-core only), aside from the part that most of those prices are higher than they should be. Black-Friday/Cyber-Monday are soon, hold off on buying any parts until then unless you're absolutely sure you've found a deal worth getting.

As far as specific GPU's go, if you're not afraid of nVidia, anything GTX460~560TI should be moderate in price and excellent in performance. You can pick up a 560TI for under $200 if you shop around. On that note you can probably also find a decent HD6950 for around the same price if not a bit more. Just read a ton of reviews first as some manufactures don't honor their warrantys, rebates, or just simply build bad products that overheat.

Also, try using this, it's nifty. http://pcpartpicker.com/
