Computer Support: Questions Help & More

Yeh, I'm going to go with the G700, nice feel to it, I do like how the Corsair's buttons are implemented, but Its a bit smaller then my own, and would like an easier transition. Also I'm not sure yet about Corsair reliability just yet. Have a Power supply of theirs, but that's it...

Ironically, most modern computers still come with RS232 serial ports, and Windows 7 will autodetect and configure a serial mouse when one is plugged in.

It should make some silly comment about how old you are.. or what garage sale you got it at... Then burst the mouse into flame because W7 is too epic for it.

I'm still getting used to my G700... Its heavier then my previous, so when I'm not using it for my laptop, I take the battery out. It's also a little bit bigger, so I have to get used to it with my mousepad size.

I already have a neat laptop, but I want to have a good desktop that is comparable or better than my laptop (so I can have a working desktop again). I'm wondering what you all think of this configuration.

Specs:

Case: RAIDMAX Altas ATX-295WB

Power Supply: Antec EarthWatts Series EA-750 Green 750W

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor AMD FX-4100 3.6GHz (3.8GHz Turbo) Quad-Core Processor

CPU Cooling unit: ZALMAN CNPS 7500 COOLER MASTER Hyper 212

Motherboard: ASUS M4N98TD NVIDIA nForce 980a SLI ATX ASUS Crosshair V Formula

RAM: Crucial 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1333

Video card: ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) 1GB GDDR5

Sound card: on board (motherboard)

Hard Drive: SAMSUNG Spinpoint 1TB

Optical Drive: LG Black 12X Internal Blu-ray Drive

Operating System: Windows 7 Professional SP1 64-bit

I do not need a new monitor (yet), nor a keyboard or mouse or a wireless card. This will be next to a router, so wired would work anyway.

Eventually I am planning on getting two video cards in SLI configuration. Please post your comments on your opinion of this build, and please do not turn this into an AMD vs. Intel or AMD/ATI vs. nVidia. I am wanting to make a reasonably priced gaming-class PC, under $1000, with blu-ray support, and 1TB Hard drive minimum, and at least a quad-core processor (no single, dual, or tri-core).

Also, if you want to recommend something less expensive than this build, please show it to me.

REALLY don't like ASUS, have had and seen a lot of trouble from them over the past years.

Also not a huge Samsung fan, but I think they are getting a better then what they used to be.

Just personal company preferences.

Everything else looks great, exactly what I'd go for more or less.

Avoid Zalman brand, they look and peform well, but they are notoriously noisy, I had a Zalman Z9 case which was unbeleivably loud, even with resistors added to the fans to slow them down. I now have an antex 1200 case which has twice as many fans and generates 10% of the noise that thing did, unfortunately I still have a Zalman PSU, works great but it squeals and chirps when my frame rate is high or my mouse moves around while web-browsing, and that is annoying as shit. If its moving parts, stay away from them. Even their water cooling would probably be loud as hell. Corsair is the way to go if you want a cold processor.

What Arokh said - Zalman works, but it's notoriously noisy. Their cases don't make sense either (they come with five 'bays', but only one tray - so the other four bays don't have anything to actually mount drives onto). I'd rather get a Corsair or CoolerMaster for CPU cooling - they work, and they are much quieter.

I'm not too concerned about the noise, but if you can suggest a specific model that is about $35 or less, and can fit an AM3 socket, I might go for it.

And I'm probably going get Arctic Silver as well.

So I skiped a video card. DOnt know what you currently have. NOt sure if you are willing to skip a new card for a little bit and wait to get the "sli" build going. with it. But this is what I got. for around $936.92. Excluding rebates tax and shiping. Keep the HDD/blue ray/OS you chose too. I put those in the price I got too.

Corsair is wonderful. I put them into all of my computers.

I picked up Corsair Memory for my upgrade, then grabbed one of their PSU's as well later on. No problems and no complaints (yet) about them. Local computer building company also uses them religiously, as they only use via their research 'the best and most reliable' parts. So I agree with Georges recommendation. They're very fairly priced as well!

My next thing to grab is a case and I do love my fans, so I'd aim for several, as large as I can get... I think you'd all think I was crazy to live with how noisy my case and it's fans are (again, why I need to upgrade it). With the new cases these days, I don't know why they think putting the PSU on the bottom is a 'great' idea, something I would avoid, just doesn't make sense to me as heat rises and if you have water cooling problems, it would be the first to get wet. I guess I like the classic design.
